Over 500 filmmakers, celebrities, media and screen industry representatives turned out to celebrate the very best in Western Australian screen production at the 27th Annual WA Screen Awards at the Heath Ledger Theatre in Perth on Monday 29 June 2015, hosted by comedian Joel Creasey.
This is the life story of 93 year old Mirriwoong Elder Vernon Gerrard, born in Wyndam-a story of ‘survival, hard work and resistance’. Vernon was an unfortunate witness to what is known as the ‘Forrest River Massacre’ near Oombulgarri when he was a young boy. Vernon will also tell his story of work on pastoral stations and in building the townships of Kununurra and Wyndham-his bush, hunting and horsemanship skills.
ICS has created a digital record on film - A national treasure of songs, dances, traditions, and oral histories for future generations and all Australians. ICS contributes to our understanding of the remaining Indigenous languages, Indigenous knowledge systems and our shared histories.
Doreen Nelson, Dorothy Jetta, Dennis Jetta and Bruce Jetta talk about their family's experiences living on Government Native Reserves from the 1930’s until the 1970’s. They describe some of the difficult circumstances and issues they faced and how traditional cultures and customs have survived over the years. The family travel to Kellerberrin and explain the significance of sites to their family history.
