Edit for a Living : Trade Techniques for Video Editors
EDIT FOR A LIVING (TV & STREAMING) is an advanced short course designed to help new graduates and emerging / strong amateur editors to be able to work successfully in a Broadcast environment.
This weekend intensive course will explore;
- Selecting the best shots for the right reasons
- Seamless editing (making your cuts invisible/ unnoticeable)
- How to ‘stay in the picture’ (fixing faulty framing)
- Structure, pace and mood (how to build your edit from a good base.)
- Different frame sizes, frame rates and formats and why they exist.
- How timecodes can save you time and your sanity.
- Colour balance repairs and quick colour tweaks
- Dealing with broadcast audio
- Delivering in a broadcast environment
This course also aims to teach participants good habits such as; protocols for working with producers and directors, how to create industry standard timelines standards, organising your workflows like a pro and how to pass on your edits to other editors /departments in the workflows that they will expect.
After completing 'Editing For A Living' students will be able to;
- Understand some of the reasoning behind editing and how to better manipulate a story using; pace, colour, sound and more..
- Have a sense of broadcast production chains, and what is expected in each role.
- Identify and repair common problems from a shoot.
- Have a stronger grip on some of the general technical aspects of editing.
- Gain basic troubleshooting skills.
- Start a career in Broadcast Editing with confidence.
About the tutor Jude Cotter: Jude first started learning to edit more than 30 years ago, and after many years of trying different careers, came back into the fold in the late 90’s, working professionally as a freelance editor cutting corporates, commercials, short films and television. She has helped to produce more than 350 broadcast programs for every major Australian TV channel, as well as Fox Sports, Lifestyle, National Geographic, Discovery and Netflix, and has cut thousands of corporate videos, TV commercials and a short film that was accepted into Cannes Court Métrage. For the past three years Jude has been in charge of technical delivery of three international factual entertainment series' being broadcast in more than 70 countries worldwide to an audience in excess of 100 million viewers via US Netflix, National Geographic, Discovery channel and the MTG group. She is an Adobe recommended trainer for Premiere in Western Australia, teaching at TAFEs, Universities, the Western Australian Police Media department, the ABC and the Screen Editors’ Guild, which is the industry association for professional editors in Australia. She is one of five administrators on the Adobe Pro Video Group Australia Facebook page, overseen by the Adobe Strategic Development Manager in Melbourne. She is also a member of the Australian Screen Editors’ Guild (ASE).

EDIT FOR A LIVING (TV & STREAMING) is an advanced editing course for those that would like to skill up and move to the next level in their editing career - It is recommended that participants are already comfortable with their chosen editing application.
Please note: Although this non platform-specific course the class / tutor will be using Premiere Pro CC. Please let FTI Know if you are going to bring your own laptop with Premiere Pro CC installed on it.
