Did you know that if you don’t comply with the legal OHS requirements you can be prosecuted and fined or imprisoned? SPAA in association with ScreenWest is hosting a special two-hour seminar to provide industry practitioners with an overview of OHS in film & TV and the resources you can access to help you plan your next steps. This will cover the requirements of current OHS law and the impact changes in OHS legislation will have on WA screen production practices and responsibilities. This free seminar will take place on Tuesday June 8.

The WA film and television industry has a good safety record but current processes and practices do not necessarily meet the requirements of the WA’s OHS Regulations 1996 nor are they adequate to meet the OHS standards of the new Federal Work Heath & Safety Act (the model Act) proposed for enactment in 2011.

Production companies must have thorough safe systems of work particularly with regards to consultation, risk management and OHS training. A safety report and reference to the Film Industry Recommended Safety Code is not sufficient to comply with employer obligations under the OHS Act and the new Act will place greater emphasis on active safety involvement by company officers.

Those who do not comply with the legal OHS requirements can be prosecuted and fined or imprisoned. The cost of not doing it can be fatal – and the culpability can extend through all levels of production to the producer, supplier and possibly the client.

SPAA have also developed a number of resources to assist you meet the current Western Australian OHS legal obligations and to help prepare you to comply with the requirements under the new model Act.
