Water Nominated For Two AFI Awards

West Australian film, Water, produced through the Hyperlink fund, has received nominations for Best Short Fiction Film and Best Screenplay in a Short Film (Corrie Jones, Sarah Shaw and Ian Meadows) for the 2009 AFI Awards.

Directed by Corrie Jones and produced by Sarah Shaw, Water is a film about a young boy’s struggle to accept his fears, his mentally disabled father and his possible future duty.

Fourteen 2009 AFI Award nominations were announced for West Australian productions and practitioners. Taylor Media’s 3 Acts of Murder received four nominations including Best Telefeature, Mini Series or Short Run Series. Robert Menzies, Anni Finsterer and Bille Brown have received nominations for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor in a Television Drama, respectively. Taylor Media is also celebrating a nomination for Time Trackers for Best Children’s Television Drama.

West Australian documentaries together received five nominations with Electric Pictures’ Cracking the Colour Code – Episode 2, Making Colours nominated for Best Cinematography in a Documentary (Ian Batt) and Best Editing in a Documentary (Lawrence Silvestrin). Matt Drummond and Mike Dunn are nominated for Visual Effects for their work on Prospero Productions’ Death of the Megabeasts and My Asian Heart produced by David Bradbury and Carmelo Musca (Asian Films) is nominated for Best Cinematography in a Documentary (David Bradbury).

Herbert Pinter was nominated in the ‘AFI Award for Best Production Design’ for his work on Mao’s Last Dancer .

Feature film Australia has been nominated for six AFI awards. Included in these nominations is “Best Supporting Actor’ for Broome actor Brandon Walters.

West Australian expat Zen Rosenthal was also nominated for Best Editing in a Documentary for his work on Essential Media & Entertainment’s How Kevin Bacon Cured Cancer.

HyperLink is a digital production initiative for early career filmmakers in WA created in partnership by ScreenWest, the Film & Television Institute (FTI) and the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS).

This year’s ceremony will be held on Saturday 12 December at the Regent Theatre, Melbourne and will be broadcast on the Nine Network at 9.30pm that evening.

FTI congratulates all the West Australian nominees and wishes them the best in competition.
