Broome Indigenous scriptwriters Dot West and Mitch Torres have added an Australian Writers’ Guild AWGIE Award to their list of achievements for their work on The Circuit Series 2. Dot and Mitch – with script producer/writer Kelly Lefever (Vic) and writer Wayne Blair (NSW) – won the AWGIE Award for a Television Mini Series Original.

“This is a fantastic achievement and shows the strength of talent of The Circuit scriptwriting team,” said Harry Bardwell, ScreenWest Director Production and Development.

“Dot and Mitch are role models for Indigenous writers around the country, and especially in Broome where so many fantastic screen stories are coming from.”

“Dot and Mitch were also scriptwriters on the award winning first series of The Circuit, which was a ratings success for SBS. This prestigious AWGIE award shows that the storylines for the second series are just as strong.”

Dot West said, “It’s great to have the acknowledgement for the hard work that’s been achieved by the script team. And it’s great to have the platform to tell stories from the Kimberley.”

Filmed in Broome and the Kimberley, The Circuit centres on the Aboriginal Legal Service and the Kimberley Circuit Court. The second series continues the journey of city lawyer Drew Ellis (Aaron Pedersen), the Magistrate (Gary Sweet), ALS court liaison officer Sam Wallan (Kelton Pell) and Clerk of Courts Bella Noble (Tammy Clarkson) as they face new cases and new dilemmas, and as they struggle for justice in a world where one law for two cultures does not equal a fair go.

The Circuit Series 2 will screen on SBS later this year.
