WA filmmaking teams accepted for Indi-Vision Lab

31 January 2008

Organisation

The Australian Film Commission (AFC) has announced the eight teams of filmmakers who have been selected to develop their projects in the 2008 IndiVision Project Lab.
Two teams from Western Australia have been accepted into the Australian Film Comission’s prestigious Indi-Vision development lab.

FTI member and 2007 Academy Award® nominee Peter Templeman has joined producer Jodi Matterson (Razzle Dazzle) and writer Michael Lucas to develop romantic comedy ‘The 20-Something Survival Guide’. When a freewheeling 20-something guy learns he has testicular cancer and will soon be infertile, the race is on to find someone to conceive with before it is too late. How hard could it be?

Director & Co-Writer Zak Hilditch, Writer Steve McCall and Producer Liz Kearney have also been selectedwith their drama ‘Small Worlds’.

Zak Hilditch lectures in Screen Writing at the Film and Television Institute, guiding new filmmakers through the process of developing feature films. His debut feature ‘The Actress’ was recently distributed by Accent Underground. Producer Liz Kearney has recently returned to active filmmaking after several years on the other side of the funding fence working in the Production Support area of FTI.

The Project Lab is part of the IndiVision initiative’s suite of practitioner development programs, including the IndiVision Production Fund, which provides funding of up to $1.25 million for low-budget features, the IndiVision Single-draft Script Development Fund, and IndiVision Marketing, which provides marketing workshops and assistance to filmmakers to travel to festivals and markets.

More than 20 filmmakers attended a reception in Sydney to celebrate their selection into the 2008 IndiVision Project Lab. A trailer providing a sneak peak at some of the films funded through the IndiVision Production Fund premiered at the event. The trailer included excerpts from Lake Mungo, Black Water, Cactus, Son of a Lion, The Caterpillar Wish, West, Ten Empty and All My Friends Are Leaving Brisbane. The trailer also offered an insider’s perspective on the IndiVision Lab, through interviews with filmmakers who have attended the three previous Labs.

Filmmakers who have developed and produced work through the IndiVision Project Lab and Production Fund joined 2008 advisors and guest speakers at the event.

This year’s Project Lab advisors and guest speakers include acclaimed American producer Christine Vachon (‘Kids’), award-winning London-based writer Laurence Coriat (‘Wonderland’), internationally renowned development executive Vinca Wiedemann from Demark, as well as Australian producers Al Clark (‘The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’), Robert Connolly (‘Romulus, My Father’), and Julie Ryan (‘Ten Canoes’), agent and producer Stacey Testro (‘Saw’), distributor Alan Finney and actor Claudia Karvan (‘Love My Way’).

The AFC’s IndiVision Project Lab takes place in Sydney, 31 January – 6 February 2008.
