Perth auteur Burleigh Smith recently received the Best Drama Award at the Katoomba Short Film Festival for Then She Was Gone. The film competed against the Academy Award-nominated Miracle Fish.
Then She Was Gone, written and directed by Smith, was shot entirely on black-and-white Super-8 film by Mat de Koning. It tells the story of Basil (Smith) who pursues Mia (Sarah Louella). But Mia is only interested in men who are masculine.
When screened at the Caught Short Festival in Sydney, programmer Katharine Rogers described the film as “Smith’s playful observation of unrequited love and the gross transformations people undertake in order to win affection. Confidently written and uniquely styled, this is an original take on a common theme.”
Then She Was Gone has screened at eight Australian film festivals to date, including Dungog, Shorts on the Green and the Angry Film Festival, where it won Best Screenplay.
