Biography
A.J Carter is the founder and CEO of Smooth Motion Films with offices in Australia & California and is currently a Director, Producer & Cinematographer by trade. A.J. started work in television at the age of just 16 as Assistant Producer for the Ch7 kids show ‘A*mazing’ hosted by James Sherry, making him the youngest person in Australia ever to fill such a position. After the first season, he continued on for a total of 195 episodes of the show (3 series).
After working at every major television station in Perth (2, 7, 9 & 10) shooting News, Current Affairs, Sports & lifestyle programs, A.J then started freelance camera, rigging management & production logistics work for Global Television. At the age of 18, A.J. had successfully achieved on screen credits in over 200 television productions.
Needless to say, the complacency and repetitiveness of ENG and Sports television production frustrated A.J at an early age and the need to excel in creativeness & his own productions saw the birth of his own production company ‘Smooth Motion Films’ at the age of 19. Over the next several years, Smooth Motion Films earned the respect of many Australia production houses by pumping out high quality work in every field from award winning Corporate presentations & Wedding DVDs to television commercials. This rise in credibility & work saw the employment of several other young film makers to cope with the load.
Along with several music video clips which received praise and regular airtime on Australia’s longest running music video program ‘RAGE’, A.J’s fascination for Motorsport led to the creation of the ‘Motorvation’ DVD series in 2004 which became a success over night and has seen the DVD series continue to its 6th year in 2009. The high quality inherent in AJ’s productions was recently recognized by Beyond Distribution (Mythbusters) and 2009 will see an Australian wide distribution, followed by world wide exports in 2010.
As a natural industry progression, A.J at 25 left his home town of Perth, Western Australia to pursue bigger and better things in the USA with the formation of Smooth Motion Films USA Inc. The Los Angeles based company is currently in developmental stages for several big productions and is quickly becoming recognized as one of the most innovative new production companies in Hollywood.
March 2008 saw the commencement of the Australian production of ‘Ronan’s Escape’, a highly controversial film written and directed by A.J. Carter for entry to the world wide major
film festival circuit. A.J’s script attracted the likes of cinematographer David Lemay (Bad Girls, In the Name of God), special effects artist Jeremy Shaw (The Lord of the Rings,
Chronicles of Narnia, King Kong) and
Academy Award nominee director Martin Mhando who offered to be A.J’s 1st AD on set. Ronan’s Escape recently premiered in 2010 and just begun the world festival circuit kicking off
with Sedona International Film Festival where the film won BEST SHORT FILM in the Directors’ Choice
Awards.
A.J. now 29, is currently working on a multitude of projects including the development of several TV series for MTV and Discovery Channels. With his success on the small screen in tow, A.J’s passion has always been with motion picture films and with the recent attachment as Director to the $20 Million feature film ‘Extinction’ in Hollywood, he is quickly becoming recognized as one of the industry’s fastest young achievers to reach success in the industry on an international level.
