Professional Industry Training in Commercial Digital Production

The Diploma of Screen & Media (Digital Production) is an intensive 30-week full-time course that provides an alternative pathway for people wishing to enter the film & television industry.

The course is designed with a strong focus on practical hands on production that allows participants to rapidly develop advanced production skills within a short time frame.

The course provides participants with an in-depth knowledge of the film making production process and it’s related technical aspects of camera operation, sound recording, non-linear editing, script development and interpretation, and project management.

Students also study theory knowledge, administrative skills, Occupational Health and Safety, Teamwork, Communication skills and Marketing.

Throughout the course the participants gain exposure to more sophisticated and complex production projects through making Micro Documentaries, Collaborative Shoots and a series of drama productions, which provide the opportunity to apply their skills in a realistic industry environment.

A 4-week crossover with FTI’s Diploma of Screen Acting offers students a unique insight into the world of acting and directing of talent.

Course Duration & Contact Hours

The Diploma of Screen & Media (Digital Production) is delivered over a period of 30 weeks at the Film & Television Institute, 92 Adelaide Street in Fremantle.

March Intake (Full Time): Contact hours average 20 hours per week, however, there a substantial amount of project-based work students complete outside the contact hours. During production projects the level of commitment increases up to 35 hours per week.

August Intake (Part Time): The mid-year intake commencing August will run part-time to fit around working hours. These hours are currently TBC but will comprise two weeknight evenings and a daytime class on the weekend. For more information on this, please contact Michaela at FTI Training on 9431 6719.

Teaching Staff

Wayne Nicholson is the Head Lecturer of the Diploma of Screen & Media (Digital Production). Wayne has directed award-winning music videos, commercials, corporates, documentaries, special features for DVD’s and short films with “Tweezers” being screened at The New York Independent Film & Video Festival, in both New York City and Los Angeles. His other film “Mummy’s Boy” was screened at the Sydney Asia Pacific Film Festival.

Wayne has written two feature screenplays. He is currently working on “Akathaso” (working title) a spiritual horror about ancient Burmese mythology set in Myanmar (Burma) and Australia.

Besides filmmaking, Wayne is also a recognised acting teacher, having taught third year students at the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA).

Entrance Requirements

Participants should be a minimum of 17 years of age. Applicants under this age may still apply and may be granted a position with a recommendation from the FTI Head of Training.

Applicants should submit a 1-page statement outlining what they hope to achieve by undertaking this course. The selection process includes a personal interview. Places are granted on a first come-first served basis, once the minimum selection criteria is approved.
