Written & Developed by Fern Nicholson, this is the first of it’s kind specifically developed for the screen actor. This Diploma of Screen Acting is an intensive 30-week full-time program that teaches the professional skills and performance techniques required by actors intending to enter the film and television industry.

Taught by experienced screen industry practitioners, the Diploma of Screen Acting course develops a strong knowledge of the screen acting process and the repetoire of skills required to present true and believable performances for the screen. Participants are trained in the acting techniques of the “method”, investigation and analysis of script and story, and to utilise voice and movement to enhance character development. Students learn to use techniques in emotional and sensory memory to unlock each actor’s individual artistic expression. Students also study audition and rehearsal preparation skills, acting theory, teamwork, marketing, administrative skills and Occupational Health & Safety.

Screen Acting students will have the opportunity of working on-camera in various workshops and film productions in conjunction with Digital Production students. This provides them with digital material for industry showreels reels and with the opportunity to apply their skills in a realistic industry environment. Graduates of the Diploma of Screen Acting will be equipped with a range of skills to provide services on a freelance basis as voice over artists, for online media, corporate productions, advertising and on fi lm and television productions.

Teaching Staff

Fern Nicholson was trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London (RADA) and has had 15 years of experience as in the development and delivery of screen drama training in Perth alone. After 13 years in musical theatre in the West End London, she decided to dedicate more time and study into screen skills and performance.

Fern has also taught master classes for the third year acting and musical acting students at The West Australian Academy of Performing Arts on the methods of Strasberg and has assisted in actors training for application to NIDA and WAAPA on a one-to-one basis.

*“It’s the space in-between the lines and the words and breathing life into a character on the page”*

*Actors need to be strong and their passion stronger so that each challenge can be an amazing journey”*

*My training was intensive, my teacher passionate and I had a great desire to challenge and stretch my skills as an actor. This is the kind of training I wish to share with my students”*

Her former role as Director of the WA company, Make Believe Entertainment encouraged her to write and develop a five level certified screen training course for actors which was presented for four years. This course proved successful and was the motivation behind the development of this new Diploma.

Fern and Wayne Nicholson have taught intensive screen acting workshops and short courses in Perth, Sydney, Singapore and Thailand.

Wayne Nicholson is the Head Lecturer of the Advanced Diploma in Screen (Digital Production). Wayne has directed award-winning music videos, commercials, corporates, documentaries, special features for DVDs and short films with Tweezers being screened at The New York Independent Film & Video Festival, in both New York City and Los Angeles. His other film Mummy’s Boy opened the Sydney Asia Pacific Film Festival. Wayne has presented Master classes in “directing actors” at The West Australian Academy of Performing Arts to third year acting students and is currently in development of his feature film “Angel of Mine” which he hopes will be in pre-production late 2009.

Other CVs are available on request.
