The Certificate IV in Screen & Media (Documentary) is an intensive 18-week part-time course that teaches the theory and techniques of digital documentary filmmaking.

The course provides participants with an in-depth knowledge of the filmmaking production and all related technical skills of camera operation, sound recording, lighting and non-linear editing.

Students study the fundamentals of documentary theory, associated research skills and the filmmaking process with a particular emphasis on production coordination and post-production editing specific to documentary filmmaking.

The Certificate IV in Screen & Media (Documentary) is designed with a strong focus on practical hands on production that allows participants to develop advanced production skills within a short time frame. The program also introduces participants to cross-platform media concepts and equips students with appropriate skills for the rapidly changing media landscape.

Throughout the 22-week course the participants gain exposure to practical applications of documentary filmmaking and complete two documentary projects.

This course has been developed through consultation with Western Australian based documentary companies.

The classes are in the evenings and on weekends, allowing great flexibility for busy professionals, family commitments and other study programs.

Substanial out of class work is also required which also involves team based filming projects. It is recommend that participants allocate an additional 10 hours per week to complete the required assignments.

The Certificate IV in Screen & Media (Documentary) is delivered in three blocks of 6 weeks of classes, in between each block participants have ample time and access to facilities to complete assignments. The breaks include school holidays for those with family commitments.

Block 2: 7 weeks – 25 May – 9 July
Block 3: 5 weeks – 10 August – 10 September
plus 4 weeks Editing access, Major project due on 8 October.

There are no classes scheduled during school holidays

Teaching Staff

In 2011 we will feature a wide variety of Guest Presenters and lecturers who actively work in the industry such as:

Janine Boreland managed FTI’s Making Movies Roadshow, a WA regional tour of filmmaking workshops and an outdoor cinema, for three years before taking on a role as 3rd Assistant Director with Media World Pictures on the production of the SBS drama series ‘The Circuit’.
She worked as Producer for DADAA’s The Lost Generation Project, a series of short films about a group of people with intellectual disabilities who have been institutionalised for most of their lives, and have little or no connection to their community.
As Directors Attachment on the production of Electric Pictures’ documentary ‘Cracking the Colour Code’ she coordinated reenactment shoots including locations, costumes, actors and the shoot on the day.
As Writer and Director she completed one episode of SBS mY Generation series called ‘Y Dwell’: http://programs.sbs.com.au/mygeneration/#/house/watch
Back at FTI she managed the project Indigenous Community Stories, a service for Indigenous communities across Western Australia, enabling them to record, archive and maintain their culture through professional broadcast-quality digital video recordings. Indigenous Community Stories digitally records Indigenous heritage, culture and history for future generations as well as creating invaluable records of Australia’s national cultural identity.

Janine holds a Bachelor of Media Production and a Bachelor of Arts from Murdoch and was chosen from a competitive round of interviews to take part in a semester of research in the iTV Factual and Learning Division with the BBC and Murdoch University in the area of interactive television.
The films she produced or directed have been screened on: ABC 1, SBS, Message Stick program, George Negus Tonight, QANTAS, Flickerfest, St Kilda Film Festival, Revelation, Black Screen, Message Stick Film Festival, The Dreaming Film Festival, Waverock Weekender, Margaret River Film Festival, Heart of Gold Film festival, CineFest Oz, Art Gallery of NSW, at the MCA (Museum of Contemporary Art) and at NFSA Black Screen and won numerous prizes and awards.
She currently works as Assistant Producer for ‘Who Do You Think You Are’ for SBS/Artemis.

Nick Dunlop has worked as Offline Editor on various productions for Electric Pictures, Prospero and ABC. He is currently workin on ‘The Making of Collision Course’ as Editor and Director including 18 2-min documentaries and one 26-min arts documentary.

Danielle Giles has a background in professional film and TV production having production roles on boutique TV commercials, TV series (All Saints, The Secret Life of Us) and US feature films The Great Raid and Son of the Mask. Moving into Producing Danielle co-wrote and produced a behind the scenes episode of The Secret Life of Us (Network 10), produced Sydney Film Festival Dendy Award finalist Autumn Moon and Robbin Hoodz which has screened at various festivals and institutions including the Smithsonian Institute in New York. Recent projects include producing 80 micro documentary films as part of the DADAA WA “The Lost Generation Project” (of which 7 films screened at The Other Film Festival, Melbourne), recently completed short film Culture Clash for ABC TV Message Sticks and has a 13 part interstitial series in development. Danielle was also the recent recipient of the ScreenWest Digital Directions 2009 Award.

Darren Hutchinson is a Researcher on the ABC series ‘Can We Help’ and previously worked on the ABC production ‘The Pet Show’. Darren is a graduate of the Film and Television Institute.

Paul Roberts is an experienced independent documentary Producer and Director whose work in ‘Footprints in the Sand: The Last of the Nomads’, ‘Land of the Little Kings’, ‘An African Christmas’, ‘How the West Was Lost’, ‘Buffalo Legends’ and the 6 part series ‘Artists Upfront’.

In 2009 Paul’s latest series ‘The Life of the Town’ premiered nationally on NITV. Paul is a filmmaker in residence at the Film and Television Institute.

Participants should be a minimum of 17 years of age. Applicants under this age may still apply and may be granted a position with a recommendation from the FTI Head of Training.

Selection Process

Selection Process
Applicants should submit a 1-page statement outlining what they hope to achieve by undertaking this course. The selection process includes an interview. Places are granted on a first come-first served basis, once the minimum selection criterion is approved.

Enrolment numbers are strictly limited to 12 to ensure each participant gains the maximum hands-on experience.
