The Certificate IV in Screen & Media (Documentary) is an intensive 18-week part-time course that teaches the theory and techniques of digital documentary filmmaking.

The course provides participants with an in-depth knowledge of the filmmaking production and all related technical skills of camera operation, sound recording, lighting and non-linear editing.

Students study the fundamentals of documentary theory, associated research skills and the filmmaking process with a particular emphasis on production coordination and post-production editing specific to documentary filmmaking.

The Certificate IV in Screen & Media (Documentary) is designed with a strong focus on practical hands on production that allows participants to develop advanced production skills within a short time frame. The program also introduces participants to cross-platform media concepts and equips students with appropriate skills for the rapidly changing media landscape.

Throughout the 18-week course the participants gain exposure to practical applications of documentary filmmaking and complete two documentary projects.

This course has been developed through consultation with Western Australian based documentary companies.

The classes are in the evenings and on weekends, allowing great flexibility for busy professionals, family commitments and other study programs.

Substanial out of class work is also required which also involves team based filming projects. It is recommend that participants allocate an additional 10 hours per week to complete the required assignments.

The Certificate IV in Screen & Media (Documentary) is delivered in three blocks of 6 weeks of classes, in between each block participants have ample time and access to facilities to complete assignments.

There are no classes scheduled during school holidays

Teaching Staff

Danielle Giles has a background in professional film and TV production having production roles on boutique TV commercials, TV series (All Saints, The Secret Life of Us) and US feature films The Great Raid and Son of the Mask. Moving into Producing Danielle co-wrote and produced a behind the scenes episode of The Secret Life of Us (Network 10), produced Sydney Film Festival Dendy Award finalist Autumn Moon and Robbin Hoodz which has screened at various festivals and institutions including the Smithsonian Institute in New York. Recent projects include producing 80 micro documentary films as part of the DADAA WA “The Lost Generation Project” (of which 7 films screened at The Other Film Festival, Melbourne), recently completed short film Culture Clash for ABC TV Message Sticks and has a 13 part interstitial series in development. Danielle was also the recent recipient of the ScreenWest Digital Directions 2009 Award.

Darren Hutchinson is a Researcher on the ABC series ‘Can We Help’ and previously worked on the ABC production ‘The Pet Show’. Darren is a graduate of the Film and Television Institute.

Paul Roberts is an experienced independent documentary Producer and Director whose work in ‘Footprints in the Sand: The Last of the Nomads’, ‘Land of the Little Kings’, ‘An African Christmas’, ‘How the West Was Lost’, ‘Buffalo Legends’ and the 6 part series ‘Artists Upfront’.

In 2009 Paul’s latest series ‘The Life of the Town’ will premiere nationally on NITV. Paul is a filmmaker in residence at the Film and Television Institute.

Adrian Beattie: is currently Director of News at Channel 9 in Perth and has experience as a senior reporter and program producer.

Adrian is an award winning documentary maker – whose recent programs for Channel 9 include ‘100 Days – The Hunt For A Killer’ and ‘To Catch A Killer – Perth’s Unsolved Murders.’

Before arriving in Perth in 2003 Adrian was a news reporter and documentary maker with the ITV network in the UK.

His documentary “Justice For Julie” won the Royal Television Society’s award for ‘Best Factual Program’ and is credited with playing a significant part in convincing the British Government to change the 800 year old law of Double Jeopardy – changes which are now making their way through the Australian states and courts.

Adrian was born in Northern Ireland and went to school in Belfast during the worst period of the Northern Ireland conflict.

After leaving school he joined a local newspaper and soon moved on to the BBC where he worked in radio and TV as a reporter and producer.

After that he moved to RTE in Dublin and worked as a reporter and presenter on the main evening news – a period which saw Adrian work as a foreign correspondent in Europe and the US.

Later he won a place on RTE’s prestigious Producer-Director course and on completion went on to manage news programs and direct current affairs shows.

Next came a move to London with ITV where Adrian worked as a news correspondent for network and regional stations – and managed to produce a few documentaries along the way.

For some years now Adrian has been passing on some of his considerable experience by lecturing and teaching various aspects of journalism, as well as analyzing news programs, current affairs shows, documentary making etc.

Participants should be a minimum of 17 years of age. Applicants under this age may still apply and may be granted a position with a recommendation from the FTI Head of Training.

Selection Process

Selection Process
Applicants should submit a 1-page statement outlining what they hope to achieve by undertaking this course. The selection process includes an interview. Places are granted on a first come-first served basis, once the minimum selection criterion is approved.

Enrolment numbers are strictly limited to 12 to ensure each participant gains the maximum hands-on experience.
