Professional Industry Training in Leading Edge Traditional and Digital Commercial Animation
The Diploma of Screen & Media – Animation is an intensive 30 week program that teaches leading edge digital and traditional animation techniques and concepts in commercial
narrative animation.
The course is broken up into three major areas.
- Animated storytelling and script writing
- Traditional and digital 2D animation
- 3D design, development and animation.
Storytelling for Animation is central to the course and participants spend substantial time creating animation scripts.
Participants further develop skills in character animation, drawing, design, traditional and digital 2D animation, maquette design, model making, 3D animation and motion capture.
Students study all aspects of creating an animated film, such as sound design, editing for animation, teamwork, administrative skills, marketing and Occupational Health and Safety
While working on commercially focused projects mentored by practicing industry professionals, participants are encouraged to devise & develop their own animation concepts and these may be selected for course productions.
Software packages taught include 3D Studio Max and Flash and the animated drawing lab is unique to WA and features high performance computers and drawing tablets.
Graduates of the Diploma of Screen & Media – Animation will be equipped with a range of animation and development skills and may seek employment as animators, assistant animators, clean up artists, storyboard artists, layout artists and background artist for commercial animation and game art. They will also be well placed to develop their own animation concepts.
Course Topics
Animated Storytelling and Script Writing
History of animation, methods of production in commercial animation, theory of comedy, developing a narrative, scriptwriting & editing. Participants view screenings of animated programs on TV and in the FTI Cinema.
Areas of Study
Traditional and Computer based 2D Animation
Classic animation production techniques, professional digital animation techniques, gesture & visual narrative skills in drawing and sequential storytelling.
3D Studies Modelling & Animation
3D digital models and images, 3D digital animation techniques, lighting and camera effects, rigging and texturing, keyframing animation & motion capture.
Post Production
Soundtracks, editing dialogue & sound, operating non-linear editing systems.
Professional Development
Health, safety and security procedures, collaborations, planning & producing projects, impacts of changing technology.
Course Duration & Contact Hours
The Diploma of Screen & Media – Animation is delivered over a period of 30 weeks at the Film & Television Institute, 92 Adelaide Street in Fremantle.
Contact hours at FTI average 20 hours per week, however, there a substantial amount of project-based work students complete outside the contact hours. During production projects the level of commitment increases up to 35 hours per week.

Teaching Staff
Tim Beeson has worked as a Project Manager on high budget corporate animations for clients including Rio Tinto and Landcorp. Tim has a wealth of creative animation experience through the development of many different projects such as ‘Desperado 2185’. ‘Schoolies’ and ‘Tifficate and Loin’. He has worked on projects for Nickelodeon Australia.
Entrance Requirements
Participants should be a minimum of 17 years of age. Applicants under this age may still apply and may be granted a position with a recommendation from the Professional Development and Training Manager.
Selection Process Applicants need to submit a half a page statement outlining what they hope to achieve by undertaking this course.
Applicants should also submit a folio of work containing examples of character drawing or modelling. The folio can include a variety of media or a specialisation. This can be a website link.
All applicants will be expected to attend an interview as part of the selection process.
Places are granted on a first come-first served basis, once the minimum selection criteria is approved.
