Being students we are unfortunately unable to pay actors, but a role on the film would certainly be a great addition to one's showreel.

The author, John Marsden's books began whilst the world's paranoid sensibilities were in a different place and the average John Humble Citizen's world view was perhaps a little less informed and sophisticated than nowadays.

The Cold War and all the proxy skirmishes which were being fought and the Russkies and the Chinese, both of communistic persuasion, were propagated by the West to be the devil collectively incarnate and about to send us all to hell in a nuclear armageddon.

Marsden's first book and its successors tapped into a teen demographic and also an older generation, still minded of the Second World War and how close-run a thing it was for Australia.

The movie is everything an action-adventure favourer would wish for, the truck-chase scene though the country town is mint - well I thought so anyway.

It is unusual for me to buy into many Australian films these days, however this one works.

The film is essentially faithful to the book but has been carefully brought up to date and taps into modern sensibiities and paranoias.

Specifically and courageously, it touches on the "forbidden" topic, which drives urgency of mining our mineral riches out of the ground and from under the oceans now whilst we can still get money for them, lest other nations who covet them, come and take them from us.

As was Marsden seemingly careful to avoid causing political and diplomatic tensions, the writers and makers of this film have also taken care not to demonise any particular nation as an enemy of Australia.

Marsden's books have been regarded by some as a "Red Dawn" rip-off and this attribution may taint 'Tomorrow When The War Began" if it is not released and promoted heavily in the US market before the remake of the movie "Red Dawn" is released.

It is however its own story and stands in its own right.

Don't sit on your hands. You'll only make them numb. Go and see this movie. You wil be glad you did.

Paramount have put their moniker on the movie. I think it may help their bottom line considerably if they don't neglect it.

- One lead male - Actor needs to have a screen age of 35+. The character is recluse and lost in the grief of loosing his family.

- Two males - screen age 25+ who have separate interactions with the main character.

- One Female - Screen age 25+ who plays the mother of the child that the main character reaches out to.

- One Female Child - Screen age 5 - 10 years who plays the little girl that brings the main characters memories of his family to the surface.

Plot Description:
The story is based around the life of a reserved middle aged man who runs a lemonade stand on a remote desert road. The character has a quiet, reclusive disposition, choosing to keep to himself as he attempts to cope with the loss of his family who died in a car accident several years before. The loss has resulted in the man feeling isolated from the rest of society, only having interaction with the few customers that approach the lemonade stand.

The story has elements of existentialism as the man attempts to find his way in life and is intended to make a statement on the everyday routine of life in an absurd situation.

Character Notes: The Young Lady is our male lead’s wife, an everyday woman, his emotional connection to the real world and ultimately his main antagonist. Photos of her and the husband are seen throughout the film, going about their day to day lives and in love. By the time we see her at the climax of the film she has turned into a something of pure evil, to which our lead must conquer.

*We do realise that the nudity my be an issue for some and are happy to answer any and all questions regarding this decision about the character. The shots containing full frontal nudity will NOT be gratuitous, but they are essential to the storytelling process.

*This is a challenging, non verbal paid role that requires an actor to be extremely physical in their performance to convey a 'real threat' to the protagonist.

Auditions will be held on Tuesday the 14th of September at 78 Palmerston street, Northbridge. Although this is a short film it is funded and actors will be paid.

Roles:

Mike: Main character. Washed out/failing actor with most of the stereotypical problems that follow. Starting to get tired of the acting life and wants to move back home.

Rob: Main character. Mike's childhood friend. Looks up to Mike, and is kind of a "follower." Determined to make it, despite what Mike says.

The shoot is mainly scheduled for Sunday, September 5th during the day and evening.

Auditions and rehearsal reading will be done Thursday, September 2nd next week if enough interest is shown.

Lauren (mid 20’s) – Main character’s housemate, a warm, somewhat motherly character, friendly nature

Todd (late 30’s) – brother to Hannah, has a big, somewhat scary look about him

Seedy guy ( mid 20’s) – makes the most of any opportunity he gets, oily, probably didn’t get invited to the party, just heard about it and came along

Elizabeth
Elizabeth is the Antagonist in the film. She isn’t naturally “nasty” but has a chip off her shoulder when it comes to Edith but the two are still friends, albeit a bit strained of late. She does think Edith is going loopy but the ironic part is that it is herself that is loosing the plot. Although she might be going crazy she still has enough energy to get around at a brisk pace. This is the way she has probably lived her life and has never been one to just sit by and watch the world go by. I see Elizabeth being similar in tone to that of Hyacinth Bucket from Keeping Up Appearances.

Elizabeth is completely unaware of her antagonism. Ignorance is bliss for her. She always keeps the same level of energy throughout the entire film. She is the character that doesn’t learn anything from the situation because she is too bigoted.

Meryl
Meryl is a very passive woman. Not wanting to get on the wrong side of someone nor wanting to upset anyone Meryl does what she needs to do keep an equilibrium in life. If this means turning a blind eye to something then she will. Meryl very well knows what is right and wrong but is also happy to sit by and lets things unfold if it means not getting into an argument. Her morals are well grounded though and if she can offer advice to someone knowing that she won’t be in the argument then she will. Unfortunately for her she is the average rose between two different thorns – Elizabeth and Edith.

Meryl seems almost nervous and unsure as to how to react. I can see her eyes darting back to Elizabeth to make sure she doesn’t “catch her out” for talking to Edith. Sort of like the hunted keeping the eye on the hunter.

Edith
Edith is the Protagonist in the film. She has been dealt a tough hand in life. Her husband died over 3 years ago now but she can’t stand to be away from him so she carries his ashes where ever she goes. Edith is a lovely lady though and wouldn’t hurt a fly. This is possibly why she gets bullied by Elizabeth as she knows she can have complete power over Edith. Edith is better friends with Meryl than she is with Elizabeth and they both share similar morals. However, Edith doesn’t stand up for herself but often wants to. She can never find the right time let alone the right words to retort with. Edith is the person we can most obviously identify with. She often finds herself on the way home thinking- “That is what I should have said!”. But of course, it’s always too late.

Edith is easily put down. We will be concentrating a lot on her expressions to tell her story emotionally. Her eyes will be the key to whether she stands up for her self or submits her self. I imagine that she would be quietly grinding her teeth the at all of the little put downs that Elizabeth throws at her.

The topic is sexual intercourse but there is no nudity or enactment.
It discusses the aspect of emotional intimacy before having sex.
