I'm keeping up pretty well with my New Year's resolution to see more movies. Fair enough it was actually last year's resolution but better late than never.
I have to admit some ignorance here, I've never seen 'The Omega Man', an earlier adaptation of this work or read the book.
This was pretty enjoyable, Will Smith is the last man on the planet following a deadly virus that has wiped out the rest of the population. He travels the empty streets of New York that have been taken over by wild animals and vegitation. He searches for other people and tries to maintain his sanity.
It's a great Sci-Fi post appocalyptic story, some of it's impact may have been lost as other films have probably taken inspiration from the original text and borrowed some of the ideas. There's shades of 'Twelve Monkeys' and '28 Days Later'. The empty streetscapes of New York are quite amazing looking.
Will Smith performs well, spending the large majority of the film on screen alone, holding his own. The film is punctuated by several flashbacks, which certainly break up the potential monotony but overall cheapen the experiences - it would have been a braver move to just leave Smith really all on his own.
Last year at the 2007 SwanCon I was part of a panel discussion called 'Whatever Happended to My Post Appocalyptic World?' For those of us growing up in the 1980's the end of the world seemed very real with the fear of HIV and the cold war super-powers. The discussion we had was insightful - and watching this film brought that discussion to the forefront of my mind. This is certainly a film that brings back those childhood fears and re-creates the bleak view of the future that was prophesised.
I'd be interested in what other people made of this film. What else have you seen lately, log on and leave your opinions.

I quite enjoy Will Smith in this. You could tell he'd worked on a lot of internal dialogue and I think he did a good job overall. The only issues I had were with some of the effects (animals mainly). I thought the animals looked a bit fake. I was also dissapointed with the typical Hollywood ending. I guess that's pretty standard these days. If you want some cheap scares and a 30sec work out from Will with his shirt off, then check it out. peace.

I thought the first half of this movie was outstanding. Will Smith alone in New York, filling his day and just trying to survie was brilliant. However the second half is filled with plotholes. Ridiculously huge ones. The CGI monsters and animals look like they had stepped out of a video game. They were cheap and nasty and ruined several moments by there fakeness. Why they didn't use actors and stunt people is beyond me.....

Hmm I liked the movie but yes it had a few holes in it. Will Smith is really good!
