Michael Hanake has just released an english version of his film 'Funny Games' that is almost shot for shot the same as his original German version.
Gus Van Sant remade Hitchcocks 'Psycho', almost shot for shot as well.
What is the point? Sure re-make a film, give a slightly different interpretation of a story, update it for a new audience but add something new.
It's like a rock band doing a crbon copy cover version, what is the point if you bring nothing new to the work.
So is Hanake just making a film for people who can't be bothered reading subtitles? Or is there something deeper going on here?

I think the "version without subtitles" idea is probably spot on, else theres no point at all to the remake.
Shot for shot remakes show directors who can't better the orginal, and just copycat the orginal, with actors, cinematography, etc being different or better possibly.
I would give credit to anyone who at least tries to bring their own vision to a movie (ie, jacksons Kong), without murdering the orginal storyline and feel of the film (ie, Planet of the apes, haha).
