Two French speaking actresses for short film. Shooting early March. Please email writer/director peter.fitzgerald@greg-rowe.com with headshots and/or to request script. Auditions will be held late February. Please note this is a non-paying role. Summary of story and characters below.
Synopsis
The film will explore the way in which shot, facial expression, music and audience pre-conception influence the manner in which people respond to a film and interpret story. This film is comprised of two parts:
The first, filmed in the French language will be screened with no subtitles. Shot in the manner of a ‘French farce’ we encounter Michelle – a rather forlorn young woman on her way to meet a friend, Mabel, at a cafe. Contrasting with Michelle’s sad eyes and furrowed brow, the older Mabel is effusive and enthusiastic about life. Over coffee, Mabel provides solid support and advice for her friend. But support about what precisely?
As the girls drink their coffee, a handsome man approaches. He stops suddenly as he sees Michelle. His eyes widen and lips part. Michelle looks to him with soft eyes. Pulses race. Michelle plays with her hair. The man waves. Mabel smiles and offers a final piece of advice to her friend.
The scene is repeated – in English thereby revealing the true nature of the story and the twists behind the identity of the handsome man, and the reasons for Michelle’s sadness. Will the audience have already twigged to the twists? How far apart is their interpretation of events between the first and second halves?
Michelle
Role: Lead
Age range: Late 20s/early 30s
Young, urban, artistic and fashionable, Michelle is also, well, a tad emotional. A sweet and quirky girl, things never seem to be simple for her - whatever she does, she always ends up like Calamity Jane. And today, things have just become a little too much.Mabel
Role: Supporting
Age Range: Mid 30s/early 40s
Quite possibly an older version of Michelle, she has seen and done it all. As such she is well placed to be a good friend and offer sage advice. Firm when necessary, she also has a keen sense of humour and cares a great deal for Michelle. She is sophisticated but without pretence.
