The Mailman
Synopsis
Malcolm is not your every day mailman, for starters, he doesn’t deliver any mail. Malcolm has adopted Bickle Street, a suburban street who are oblivious to his everyday presence among their lives. Malcolm considers himself the puppet master of the street, intercepting their mail, and taking care of their everyday business that they don’t have time for. He pays bills, gets rid of junk mail, writes letters for people who forget, and even does the occasional weeding. He also stops letters and packages getting to the love of his life, Juliette, who lives at number 8. Malcolm has been in love with her for years, but has never once spoken to her. Because of his social inability, he finds other ways of making Juliette happy. He does her dishes when she is away, sends her flowers, and sometimes finds himself spending all day alone in her house. This is all until he intercepts a letter for Juliette, from a man named Christopher, who is hoping they can ‘work things out’ when he comes to visit in one week. Malcolm decides he must take action, but in doing so, he puts his own lifestyle (and house full of mail) at risk of exposure.
Malcolm
Role: Lead role
Age range: 30-55 (Or older looking 25)
Malcolm is a mailman of a small town. He lives by himself in a flat, and has no contact with friends or family due to his severe social issues. He is severely lonely, desperate for acceptance, sometimes violent, and thinks of himself as a silent hero. This is very much a character piece, and the character of Malcolm is a very complex one. A very big challenge – but something an actor can really sink their teeth into.Juliette
Role: Supporting
Age range: 20-30
Juliette lives at number 8 Bickle street, and is absolutely unaware that she is being stalked by the mailman. Mainly we see Juliette from afar, until the final confrontation when Malcolm attempts to save her, for which she rejects him. She is gently beautiful, intelligent and not altogether kind.Percy
Role: Supporting
Age range: 50 and up
Percy is a suspicious old man, who lives on Bickle Street. He sees Malcolm on the street doing strange things, and does not trust him. He is fairly sure Malcolm is stealing the mail. But he is also forgetful, and is facing eviction, until Malcolm pays his bills.Rhonda
Role: Supporting
Age range: 30-55 (Or older looking 25)
Rhonda is a controlling, manipulative, religious fanatic that lives at number 5. Along with wanting to convert everyone in the street with her never-ending pamphlets, she is also driven insane by the loud drumming that continuously comes out of the house next door. Malcolm does not like Rhonda, and after her pamphlets turn up in a pile on her front lawn, she begins trying to track down the person who is causing the ‘crime spree’ on Bickle Street.Jake
Role: Supporting
Age range: 16-20 (Or younger looking people in their 20’s)
Jake lives at number 7 Bickle Street. His life is playing drums. Rhonda, the women next door, makes his life difficult as she ‘cannot stand the incessant noise.’ Malcolm protects Jake, making sure Rhonda’s petitions to stop the noise never get to his mother, nor his bad reports. Other than anyone else in the street, Jake notices what Malcolm is doing for him.Kevin
Role: Minor Role
Age range: 25-35
Kevin is Malcolm’s boss, and he is sick and tired of getting complaints about people not getting their letters. Throughout the film he continuously warns Malcolm that he is watching him, and eventually fires him. Kevin thinks very highly of himself, and considers himself a high-class business man, although he is only a manager in a post office.Christopher
Role: Minor Role
Age range: 20-30
Christopher is the ex boyfriend of Juliette. His letter to Juliette is what sparks the conflict in the script, as he is coming to see her in one week. When he finally arrives, Juliette and Christopher begin fighting, and Malcolm bursts in trying to save the day – and there is a conflict between the three of them.We have no budget, so this will not be a paid film, but we will be entering the film into many festivals after it’s completion. This will be good exposure for the actors involved, who will also get an IMDB credit. We have a friendly and professionals crew, with a passionate and talented director Markus Hermansen – who made the award winning film ‘Restare Uniti.’
Auditions will be held on Monday the 9th January 2012.
We ask that you provide headshots and a resume. Please email our producer Michael Rivers for further information: themailmanfilm@gmail.com
