Sometimes you see announcements of collaborations or projects that intersect some of your favourite things.

Phillip Glas (who I love) is to make an opera based around the life of Walt Disney.

I'm going to ponder about this one a lot...

Will Radio kill the TV Star? ABC takes on Breakfast TV

| | Comments (0)
If the ABC's new breakfast format grabs viewers, how will the commercial networks respond?

In early November the ABC will launch a new breakfast news program on ABC 2, hosted by Barrie Cassidy and Virginia Triolli this new program will take on the established commercial breakfast news programs of 'Sunrise' on Channel Seven and 'Today' on Channel 9.   Rumours are persist that Channel 10 is considering dumping it's 'Toasted TV' collection of kids programs for a news service as well.

The battle between 'Sunrise' and the long running 'Today' show have been one of the most interesting battles of local television to watch over the last few years.   It's included talent poaching as Jessica Rowe moved from TEN to NINE and then SEVEN, and Lisa Wilkinson went from SEVEN to NINE, recently SEVEN had a go and getting Karl Stefanovich from NINE.

The time slots on either sides of these shows have also been interesting to watch, SEVEN nows has a lead in 5:30am news bulletin, while the TODAY show moved there start time earlier to match.   SEVEN introduced 'The Morning Show' with Larry Emdur and Kylie Gillies which allowed them to keep the audience which used to switch over to NINE to watch 'MORNINGS WITH KERRY ANNE', a move that has has a big effect on the ratings of TEN's '9AM WITH DAVID AND KIM'.

Now into the frey jumps ABC 2 with 'ABC NEWS BREAKFAST' - a show which aims to present a serious face of news in the morning, a strong opposite to Channel Seven's light and fluffy 'SUNRISE' program.   This leaves NINE's 'TODAY' stuck in the middle of the two content wise, a little more serious than SEVEN, but a little less serious than the ABC.

The ABC however plan to take advantage of their well established radio broadcasts and have had cameras fitted into many of the their radio studios around the country, giving them a larger talent pool to draw upon rapidly than the commercial stations currently do.   Suddenly a in-studio radio interview can suddenly also be a TV program.   if you've seen the ABC's JTV program, you know how this works.

The other advantage is that the audience may stay with the broadcast during their morning comute, switching from ABC TV to ABC radio in the car.

So what will Channel SEVEN do?   How long before their is a camera in the radio studios of Austereo stations across Australia to capture additional guests and content?
