May 2008 Archives

The Presets are uber cool at the moment, their song 'My People' and their new album 'Apocalypto' has been their main stream breakthrough.   We love 'The Presets' in the FTI Training Office, we're long term fans with both 'Beams' and 'Blow Up' on our long term I-pod playlists.

So how are 'The Presets' encouraging people to sign up for their mailing list, easy - give away a free tune.   An exclusive remix of 'Are you the One' by French Whiz Kid, Lifelike.

Could this work for a filmmaker?   What if you got a short intro to a film, like the short in front of 'The Darjeeling Ltd' that would tempt you to go see the feature.    Would it work?

Pirate TV is popular 12-18 hour after a broadcast

A study has shown that while illegal copies of television programs might hit the internet on popular sites like YouTube within minutes of the boradcast finishing.   The viewership for these programs does not arrive until 12 to 18 hours after the broadcast.

Smart television programers will soon relaise that an increasingly large part of the modern population does not work 9-5 and get home in time to see their shows.   Modern society is full of shirt workers, late night hospitality workers and people who study after work.

Currently broadcasters often show encore 'episodes' late at night later in the week.   PAY-TV however seems more intune, showing content the following morning or on weekend afternoons.

NOKIA are running a new competiton where people shoot film on their mobile that will later be edited together to create a bigger film by Director Spike Lee.    Calling it the democratisation of film, you have to wonder though if anything watchable will come out of the process?

Free Music Movement Continues

Last year in the Training Wheels blog we highlighted that UK rock band Radiohead were giving their music away for free and suggested what this could mean for the film industry in the future.

The free movement is still going stong, Chris Anderson editor of WIRED and author of the best selling book 'The Long Tail' has recently published an article on free and it'll also be the focus of his next book.

Radiohead, whose album still went on to be a best seller when released in a traditional CD format, have announced that they won't be giving away any other music away.   Another British band Coldplay however have followed the trend, giving away the first song from their new album.

Radiohead however have moved on, they recently allowed fans to buy their track 'Nude' is seperate parts so they could remix it themselves.   Fans would actually buy the track several times off iTunes, first buying the drums, then the guitars and so on.   Fans were then encouraged to upload their music to the bands website to win a prize.   It's been a huge success with over 2,200 versions of the song created.   Fans could add a vote my remix widget to their personal websites and blogs, and the many many versions of the song have swamped MP3 file sharing sites and the pirate MP3 trade.   The end result, Radiohead found a way to get their fans to buy their song several times, and they are HUGE dominating the online world.

Many people in Australia have learned to edit using the famous AFTRS editing footage, a clip of a bank robber changing a tire.   I wonder if AFTRS would be interested in creating a site where people could upload the many thousands of versions of this film.
