Promote your film, more actors, more supporters

The blog from Cosolidated Films follows the philosiphy of find fans, then make the film.   They has an interesting post titled, 'Marketing Your Film Through Finding Actors' .    Basically they highlight that if you take some time to put intestesing people in all those small roles, or make sure you have lots of small roles in your film, these people in turn will be evalgalists for your finshed product.

A greatway to see how true this is at the WASA Wednesday screenings that are currently on during the Fremantle Outdoor Film Festival, chasing the covetted 'Most Popular Film Award', filmmakers encourage as many people as possible to come down and see their film.   Yet films that have more actors, can rely on more grandmas, aunts and uncles, flatmates and friends of each performer to be dragged along as well.

What the article of course fails to mention is that a film with lots of small parts is of course a lot harder to write and film.

Film Ettiquette from Christian Bale

WARNING: This post contains links to content that contains coarse language.   Reader discresion is advised.

A clip of Chritian Bale 'going off' on the set of 'Terminator Salvation' has surfaced at TMZ and quickly spread across the internet and onto mainstream news services.    At first listen many people would be astounded at the way the Batman actor speaks to crew members.   His tirade is filled with profanity and threats.

The outburst occurred after Director of Photography Shane Hurlbut walked across his line of vision during a crucial scene, distracting the actor.   It wasn't the first time Hurbut had walked onto set that day, apparently he's a known light tweaker.

Yet for those who know how a film set works, there is a deeper insight to be discussed.

Why was the DOP adjusting lights during the scene?
Isn't the rule about not moving or getting in vision lines, causing eye contact one of the first things everybody learns before they go on set?
Why didn't the 1st Assistant Director step in?
Why did the Director McG hang back and let the tirade go on?

It's not all bad, Bale has appologised, Whoopi Godlberg sprang to his defence, Harry Knowles put the event in context, Darren Aronofsky and Michael Winner agreed with his position.

Two people who are probably glad that Bale's tirade has become public are Director David O'Russel and Actress Lilly Tomlin, who fell out while filming 'I Heart Huckabees'.   At least people will stop using their clip as much when talking about set ettiquette.

Our roundtable discussion on set ettiquette is coming up in April.   A roundtable event is where several experienced industry members come and share their views and experiences on a topic in a informal social gathering.   The contributions of Christian Bale and David O'Russel are sure to provide an interesting starting point for the discussions.
