Continuity 101

Here is a super helpful site that answers questions about the role of a Continuity person - that most important but often forgotten role in films.

In this job we call Production Support, sometimes we stumble upon interesting sites that may be of interest to you, the dedicated membership of the Film and Television Institute.

The accurately named Silent Film Music is as the name suggests. Ben Model is the web guy whose site this is and he is also a silent film accompanists working in the U.S.  His scores are available on DVD and he has toured internationally with a number of silent movies.

If you want to know how one might approach accompanying The Little Pest (1926) by Jay Belasco or Au Bonheur Des Dames (1930) by Julien Duvivier or Windsor McCay’s Gertie the Dinosaur (1914), this is the place to go.  Model also has a blog that may interest you who want even more silent film goodness.

The American Film Institute’s ScreenNation site has a lot of material for the newbie filmmaker to browse. There are a number of shorts that have been entered into competition, or AFI “Challenges”. They have video reviews of films and a good number of award-winning shorts to view in a wide range of categories.  There are a number of filmmaking tutorials – some of which are hosted by the Lord of The Rings' Sean Astin (although you may know him from such films as 50 First Dates and Encino Man)

The Raindance site has a number of functions. It is the on-line focal point of the UK’s Raindance Festival, training courses and Raindance TV . It has plenty of that spiky ‘tude we like from the Brits. “We don’t teach filmmakers.  We make filmmakers.”  That’s their motto. They also have some high quality shorts for you to peruse and in this era of the amateur YouTube vid, shorts of a funded quality are important to see in order for emerging filmmakers to get some context.  For their own work.

Check these out, they're free resources just waiting for you on the interweb.
