August 2008 Archives
FTI, along with our sister Screen Development Australia (SDA) branches across the country, are holding a pitching competition.
FTI held our heat of the SDA Pitch on Wednesday August 20, at the Velvet Lounge in Mount Lawley.
14 people participated with 3 minute pitches each. The quality of program ideas pitched were all excellent.
The judges – Francesca Hope, Ryan Hodgson and myself had a very hard time coming up with a winner – but awarded it to Gary Sewell who won us over with his dark adult comedy/drama called “Broken People”.
Broken People
'Broken People'
13 x 1hr episodes
Adult drama/comedy TV serial
SYNOPSIS: They're dealing with a bisexual love triangle, substance abuse, suicidal thoughts, unspeakable secrets and horrifying violence. You'd think they'd need therapy, but they're the ones giving it.
Ryan, Fiona, Emma, Trent and Sean are five friends who will battle each other, their patients and the serial killer in their midst. But just how much can these psychologists endure before they break?
Gary now goes on to Sydney to battle it out against other states at SPAA fringe and schmooze until he drops!
Good Luck Gary! WA will be cheering for you!
At the AWG Creative Briefing with Media World and Taylor Media
Anomie looks after FTI’s online Communications and New Media initiatives letting FTI members in on all the goss via the FTI electronic newsletter and website. It's her job to know what’s going on locally, nationally and internationally in professional and independent sectors and that's how she got into the sold out Writers' Guild briefing on Tuesday 5 August to hear Ross Hutchens from Media World and Natalie Bell and Kit Oldfield from Taylor Media speak about the projects they are interested in seeing. She thought she should share it in the Production Support Report.
Media World is looking to work with people they know. Ross is more interested in who you are and what you've done. He wants recommendations from, and to hear of your track record through, Perth industry people, so work on your six degrees of separation from Ross making sure the trail is all good. While you're at it, get the goss on his passions and interests because he wants to make media of which he's personally proud. Ross is interested in projects that are written to fit initiatives, such as the Matched Primetime Fund so keep up with ScreenWest news, and likes writers to think about issues like the fact that longer form (56 episodes) children's animation allows for toy manufacturing which translates into dollars.
Kit is the new Development Manager at Taylor Media so projects should go through Kit. He's sick of what he calls 'Australian TV Naturalism’ and is after projects expressed with style. Taylor Media is specifically calling for comedy narrative series (6-8 x half hour), children's series (C classified), low budget localised features (not in genre) and adult TV drama short run series (2-6 x 1 or half hour). Kit would like to read 3 page outlines accompanied with a "why make it" statement that represents the passion in the proposal and indicates an awareness of audience, a CV and a release form (AWG safe document). You don't have to have a finished script and you don't have to be a writer: creative collaborations with "storytellers" in any creative practice will be considered. Kit maintains that ABC and SBS are more adventurous these days given their trouble with ratings, particularly if the project has the potential to go cross media. Oh, and if you send something in before 22 August, you are going to get a really fast response.
Both Media World and Taylor Media have relationships with ABC and SBS so make the most of this connection because, like Ross, the broadcasters also like to work with those they know.
All good common sense info for writers from Ross Hutchens, Natalie Bell and Kit Oldfield. It's great to have Media World and Taylor Media in the state.

Here in Production Support, we've been inundated for requests for Producers. So if you are a Producer or Production Manager then your ideal director or writer could be waiting for you at our Perfect Match event on August 14.
Remember guys, the event is all about networking and meeting people that you could potentially team up with creatively (we aren't really into matchmaking that much, but we do enjoy the gossip!). The creative team is one of the first thing a panel looks at when assessing applications - so remember there is no "I" in team and come out and meet some people!
FTI production support manage a range of great funding initiatives - but its not only about who the director is, a creative producer is all too important. With LINK coming up on August 28, directors and producers should be getting together very soon to prepare their applications.
Till then, fly my social butterflies, fly!
