Remember this?
Q. How do you get of an elephant?
A. You don't, you get off a duck....
Nah, it doesn't age well.
The duck we are disembarking from at this stop has more to do with cricket. Specifically, the metaphorical duck's egg that represent zero which equals the number of funded films you new filmmakers have made so far.
But it can happen. You need to start with information.
You've got a story to tell and need some money, but you've never shot anything apart from the time you faked your cat lip-synching to Amy Winehouse for Australia's Funniest Home Videos.
Here's where the Film and television Institute can help you. Each year we run the Town of Vincent Film Project in conjunction with the good people at the Town of Vincent. We also run the Raw Nerve Fund in conjunction with the Australian Film Commission. Although different funds the films have a similar scope and length.
And we're about to screen the 2007 Town of Vincent films and the 2007 Raw Nerves for the edification of new filmmakers keen to make their markby making a very short, funded film.
Cue Blurb:

(ABOVE) Reps from ABC On-Line at the podiumGreetings FTI Members,
Production Support were at the launch of the Digital Arts Initiative at the WA Art Gallery Theatrette on Monday the 9th of June. The event was well-attended by both familiar faces from the world of WA film and doco, but also unfamiliar (to us) faces from the digital and online sphere.
In the spirit of the occasion, we took some snaps of the event on our phones. Hence the staggering quality of the shots. But the immediacy, people.
Reps from the Department of Culture and the Arts, ScreenWest and the ABC were there in force presenting the scheme. We were shown examples of digital content from around the WWW This Initiative is looking for short, snappy, innovative concepts focussed on the Arts. You probably have a brilliant idea locked in your subconscious and don’t it yet.
Here is the official spiel on iArts:
iArts (Digital Interactive Arts Initiative)
The Department of Culture and the Arts (DCA) and ScreenWest are pleased to announce the launch of iArts, a digital arts initiative partnering Western Australian Digital Content Producers with Arts Practitioners. iArts will be produced and published in association with ABC TV .
In 2008, iArts will facilitate at least two interactive projects to be hosted by ABC TV across its digital platforms. We are seeking partnerships and collaborations between Western Australian resident producers of digital content and Western Australian arts practitioners, including arts companies or practitioner collectives, to create multiplatform interactive projects for a national and international audience.
What is iArts?
iArts is a new digital programming space hosted by ABC TV. It aims to publish and promote content collaborations between Western Australian arts practitioners and digital content producers. The content produced will be published by ABC TV on its online site. Additionally the content could be podcast, vodcast, streamed or broadcast on mobile devices. The project must incorporate a short companion piece for television.
It is hoped that these collaborations will generate new interactive works from WA for a national and an international audience. Incorporating interactivity on multiple platforms will allow the collaborating artists and producers to broaden the scope of their practice to directly involve audiences in the work.
Project Funding
DCA, ScreenWest and ABC TV have committed up to $160,000 production funding to iArts in 2008. It is anticipated that a minimum of two projects will be funded. The maximum amount funded will be $80,000 per project. All projects will be comparatively assessed on the strength of the partnership, demonstration of a shared vision, engagement with different platforms and budget feasibility.
It is anticipated that a request of $80,000 will provide most, if not all, of the cash income required to enable the team to produce a core work to be published online, plus interactive elements and any additional content required for podcasting , vodcasting or broadcasting .
