History

The Film & Television Institute (FTI) is one of the oldest screen resource and development centres in Australia. Incorporated in 1971, originally as the Perth Institute of Film & Television (PIFT), the organisation merged with Frevideo ten years later to become the Film & Television Institute WA Inc in 1982.

As a membership based not-for-profit organisation, FTI provides the West Australian community with valuable access to independent screen culture and creates greater opportunities for telling local stories through digital media formats.

Responding and adapting to social and technological developments, FTI has continued to be relevant to the wider industry and currently provides a range of educational training and development programs, production assistance schemes, equipment and post-production facilities, industry networking support and major screen culture events.

FTI is located in the heritage-listed 19th century Fremantle Boys’ School in Princess May Park, the Institute’s premises now contain the 121-seat FTI Cinema, the Bohemia outdoor cinema, the Animation Centre including drawing and computer labs, Digital editing suites, Training rooms, Production Studio space, plus the main hall, kitchen and courtyard and office accommodation.

FTI is a leading member of Screen Development Australia, a national network of state screen resource organisations, and is financially supported through the FTI Membership, ScreenWest, the Screen Australia, and corporate and community partnerships.
